The exhibition ‘Rescue’, curated by Luís Alegre, consists of a dialectical exercise between sculptors Anabela Soares, who has been a resident artist at the P28 studio since 2013 and is a member of the Manicómio art collective, and José Maria Rodrigues (1906-1999), master of black clay, whose artistic expressions resist the elitism and excessive commercialization of art. This is a unique opportunity to appreciate a priceless collection of popular art, crossing different realities of the same universe.
The exhibition ‘Rescue’, curated by Luís Alegre, arises from the mutual interest of P28 and the Barcelos Pottery Museum in exhibiting the works of José Maria de Ribolhos (1906-1999), master of black clay from a village in Castro Daire, and Anabela Soares, from the Manicómio art collective and resident artist at the P28 studio since 2013.
“Rescue” is a dialectical exercise between sculptors, whose artistic expressions resist the elitism and excessive commercialization of art, and a unique opportunity to showcase in Lisbon a priceless collection of folk art (kindly lent from the private collection of the collector Alexandra Ribeiro Simões), bringing together different realities from the same universe. David Graeber saw the history of humanity as a non-linear process, marked by deviations and resistance. The exhibition "Rescue" reflects this idea, bringing together works by Zé Maria de Ribolhos and Anabela Soares, united by their use of clay as a means of expression and resistance against the oblivion imposed by modernity. Both artists reject conventional categories. The rescue they operate is not nostalgic, but insurgent — a transformation that affirms art as a vital gesture of survival and liberation.
