Guided tours, painting sessions, tile-making and potter’s wheel workshops are some of the activities organised by the Municipality of Barcelos to take place at the Pottery Museum from 11 to 18 May, as part of the celebrations for National Tile Day, International Museum Day, and "Good Morning Ceramics".
National Tile Day ~
To mark National Tile Day, celebrated on 6 May, the Municipality of Barcelos has prepared two initiatives to promote this architectural expression, so characteristic of the city’s heritage. Taking advantage of a day when people have more free time, on Saturday 11 May at 9:30am, the Archaeology and Historical Heritage Office will lead an interpretive walk as part of the "+ Heritage Programme", including a guided tour of Eduardo Nery’s tile panel, located on the façade of the Pottery Museum building.
International Museum Day and European Museum Night
From 14 to 18 May, the Pottery Museum will host a series of educational activities and practical workshops for schoolchildren, under the theme “The fundamental role of museums as dynamic educational institutions that promote cultural discovery and understanding.”
On 18 May, to celebrate International Museum Day and European Museum Night, several activities will be held: at 10:00am and 3:00pm, guided tours of the Pottery Museum for the general public (registration required via museuolaria@cm-barcelos.pt, subject to availability); at 9:30pm, a raku ceramic firing with João Carqueijeiro will take place in the museum garden, and the evening will conclude with a final guided tour of the museum at 10:00pm.
Good Morning Ceramics
Also on 18 May, as part of the ‘Good Morning Ceramics’ programme, from 10:00am to 12:00pm and 3:00pm to 5:00pm, visitors will be invited to take part in a hands-on pottery wheel experience, led by Fernando Russo, held in the Pottery Museum garden.
On 19 May at 3:00pm, a family painting workshop entitled “Crests, the Talking Rooster” will take place.
