Arlindo Fagundes - Uma Aventura no Barro
Ongoing
The exhibition Arlindo Fagundes: Adventures in Clay, presented in the Chapel Room of the Museum of Pottery, explores the multifaceted career of one of the most significant Portuguese creators associated with ceramics, drawing, and illustration. Rather than offering an exhaustive retrospective, it brings together a representative selection of works that highlights the diversity of his output and the dialogue he established between different artistic languages. From ceramics to drawing, from illustration to comics, and from painting to sculpture, Fagundes’s work is distinguished by its ability to bring together references, techniques, and creative worlds, forging a distinctive artistic language.
His relationship with ceramics and with the Minho region is particularly significant in the context of the Museum of Pottery. At Olaria Ágata, in Prado, Fagundes developed a body of work deeply rooted in the region’s pottery tradition, which he reinterpreted through drawing, caricature, and humour. His figures reveal a unique dialogue between tradition and contemporary expression, contributing to the appreciation and renewal of Portuguese figurative ceramics.
The organisation of this exhibition is therefore a tribute to the artist and ceramicist Arlindo Fagundes, acknowledging his contribution to ceramics and the visual arts in Portugal. By welcoming his work, the Museum of Pottery reaffirms its mission to preserve, study, and promote ceramic heritage, while highlighting the artists and craftspeople who have shaped it. Arlindo Fagundes: Adventures in Clay thus offers an opportunity to revisit a distinctive body of work and to situate his career within the history of Portuguese ceramics.
